[ARCHIVED] Tips to Avoid Contractor Fraud

Beware of Storm Scams

Due to the amount of hail in the metroplex last night, there is likely to be a rush of contractors in Town soliciting services for hail damage repair. The Town encourages residents to be mindful that the Town requires any contractor soliciting for repairs to first obtain a Solicitors Permit from the Prosper Police Department

Any company performing a roof replacement must also be registered as a contractor with the Town and obtain a Residential Remodel Permit with the Town's Building Inspections Division. This process was put in place by the Town to protect homeowners and their property by ensuring contractors are properly registered with the Town and have provided appropriate proof of insurance.

Tips to avoid contractor fraud:

  • Get written estimates with clear contact info.
  • Get multiple bids for comparison.
  • Check references thoroughly.
  • Watch out for out-of-town or door-to-door solicitors.
  • Don't pay upfront or sign incomplete contracts.

Once a contractor has been approved and issued a solicitor permit, it is emailed to the contractor for them to show residents on their phone, or they can choose to print it out (see example of Solicitor's Permit). If you are contacted by a contractor who does not have a Solicitor's Permit, please call the Prosper Police Department at 972-569-1000.
